The causes of hip and knee pain are wide and varied. The NHS states that, hip pain could be caused by a sudden injury, joint hip fracture, bursitis, ‘snapping hip syndrome’ – to name a few or a more chronic condition such as arthritis. Knee pain could be a result of tendonitis, bursitis, a torn/stressed ligament or fascia, osteoarthritis, or a rheumatological condition.
The foot, knee and hip are thought of as a ‘closed chain’, so what affects one, will affect the other. Osteopathy can help in evaluating to what extent the cause of the pain are inter-related. A study in 2018 concluded that osteopathic techniques can be used to complement conventional treatment of pain in the knee by improving function and relieving pain.
